zinodaur asks:Hey there Natalie ! I have just discovered you and I gotta say that your style is awesome ! I hope you don't mind, but could you give some instructions on how to obtain that gritty shading of yours ? If not, I understand. Anyway, keep rocking that art. Thanks !
Hey zinodaur!Hi! I use a variety of custom brushes and the noise filter to achieve the “gritty shading” (I have a few brushes available to download for free - see this post).
If you have Photoshop, I’d suggest having a play around with the “Brush” panel to add textures and noise to brushes (try the “soft round brush” with the “noise” option checked and the “stone” texture added), or create your own brushes from scanned in textures.
And thanks!

More practise at environment stuff! This timed I tried out a few different textures and ways of illustrating foliage.

I could go on tweaking this forever, but I’m going to call it done and move on!
Here’s a link to the initial sketch of this illustration, which I posted a couple of days ago.

Here’s a sketch of a forest/cottage scene along with some test colours. This year I’m going to try and broaden the range of colours I use together, as well as trying out new textures and painting styles.

More sketching; this time a seafront town.
